Worship Resource Manual - Preface
Cycle A | Cycle B | Cycle C
The Moravian Music Resource Manual is a project sponsored by the Commission on Music and Worship of The Moravian Church in America, Southern Province. Ideas for the project’s initial phase were generated by the ministers and musicians listed on the last page of this document under Contributors.
Our intention is to share our thoughts and to begin to make available a wide variety of ideas for choosing music to coordinate with scripture lessons for the entire three-year liturgical cycle. Scripture lessons for each Sunday and other occasions of the liturgical year are listed according to The Revised Common Lectionary adapted for use in the Moravian Church in America published by the Interprovincial Board of Communication, P.O. Box 1245, Bethlehem, Pa. 18016.
The documents currently listed contain ideas for worship planning for the Year C and for part of Year A in the Moravian Church. Additional seasons will be made available on this site as they are completed with periodic updates as the documents evolve.
Each Sunday’s listing begins with the theme for the day followed by ideas for appropriate prayer.
Then follows a variety of suggested music listed under the applicable individual scripture lessons, which have also been briefly summarized. Unless otherwise indicated, hymns are from the Moravian Book of Worship © 1995 by the Interprovincial Board of Communication, Bethlehem, Pa. The term Service Music refers to short anthems, choruses, or hymn verses which could be used as introits, preparations for or responses to prayer, or other components of a service. Music suggested as appropriate for the day as a whole appears towards the end of each document under Other Music Suitable for the Day. Additional Creative Ideas may be included at the end of each document. A wide variety of difficulty levels are included with the hope that small and large churches may benefit from this resource. Some musical selections are available from The Southern Province Lending Library housed at The Moravian Music Foundation (abbreviated as MMF) at 457 S. Church Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101.
This is a work in progress and you are invited to participate! Do you have a suggestion? The Commission invites you to submit suggestions for any Sunday in the three-year cycle. Please send all suggestions in writing to: Commission on Music and Worship, c/o Lynda Alexander, Director of Music, Home Moravian Church, 529 S. Church Street, Winston-Salem, N.C., 27101. Include one non-returnable copy of any proposed anthem (printed or authorized copies only).
This material is copyrighted; however, individuals are permitted to copy documents in this manual for worship planning use only.
